Prevent .DS_Store creation on network volumes

Note to myself: Execute following command in a terminal 

defaults write com.apple.desktopservices DSDontWriteNetworkStores true

Mac OS X Hints indicates that this works only in 10.4 - is this true? Will it work in 10.3?
